feelMATH

The feelMATH project is designed to prepare students for success in college-level math and engineering courses.

feelMATH is based on learning science — the understanding that learning happens in the “doing” of math, is incremental, involves patterns, and accelerates with feedback. feelMATH responds to the important and timely mission of improving math literacy and confidence, so young scholars will be ready to engage with their university instructors in college-level math and entry engineering courses.

At Zoetic, your child’s math confidence is our top goal. The feelMATH project is designed to preserve and expand on your child’s sense of math identity and confidence speaking the language of math.

Studies show that students are leaving high school unprepared to do well in math and engineering courses in college, like Calculus and Linear Algebra in college. Entry level STEM courses in universities across the country have the highest student failure rates. Often, because of this, students changes their majors to a degree program that does not require math.

But we know these students who fail. They think logically, apply reason, and bring a lot of talent that ends up missing from higher level engineering courses and organizations looking for their talent, across the county. So, what is missing for these at risk students upon entry into university? At Zoetic Evaluation, our research shows students who fail math courses early in their degree programs lack basic math literacy or the comfort they need to decode math symbols, communicate their thinking, and apply concepts.

When students lack math literacy, they are dealing with higher high cognitive load and face barriers to communicating what they know and can do. Math literacy can be developed for every student and the feelMATH project exists to do this by exposing students earlier to the same math symbols and conceptual knowledge university instructors assume they will know upon entry into university. The feelMATH project is designed to build upon student success.

At Zoetic Evaluation, we developed feelMATH to improve the likelihood that your child will be able to comfortably speak the language of college-level math when they arrive at university. From their previous results, feelMATH chooses the next math problem they will see to encourage engagement and success over time. Getting positive results from the program requires students to participate, so new problems are introduced in a way that aligns with learning science and research on feedback to increase student motivation and confidence.

Students can start the feelMATH program at any age, and middle school is recommended. The problems they get will take no more than 15 minutes a day and they will be able to track their progress in terms of the number of problems they have attempted and their success rate.

Try these two experiments.

Experiment 1. Show the following figure to your child. Can they tell you what it means? What are they supposed to do? Can they find the answer?

Experiment 2. Show the following figure to your child. Can they explain what it means? Can they find the determinant of the matrix?

At Zoetic Evaluation, we are very excited to introduce feelMATH. We believe that feelMATH offers a new, accessible pathway to math literacy for your child and math learners everywhere.

(Oh! and the answers to the above experiments are 6 and 1.)
